Try to Harmonize a Melody

There are basically two ways to write music. One way is from the bottom or harmonic approach.

Composer / arranger takes a few chords, a sentence them to hang and arrange a kind of harmony in the pattern. Examples include walking You often hear in contemporary music. loop only a harmonic background to the melody (or not) played.

The second way to write music is by starting with the melody. Composers may or may not have a complete picture of the idea (I’d rather not), but the idea of the melody provide a kind of sense. The phrase most commonly used is the 8-bar phrase.

I think starting with the melody is easier to approach. Why? Because the melody is easier to move forward than harmony. Of course you can block a few chords and arrange them in a loop, but it was static from time to time. Melody is much easier to continue.

By using the principles of repetition and contrast, we can a simple ABA form in a short time. Then we can go back and tune each section.

I used the harmonic approximation initially support. It’s easy to just write down chord changes on the eight-bar phrases, creating a kind of scheme, and improvised a melody on top. Nothing wrong with this approach in total. But soon I found myself learn the melody first. Not because I think it’s better, but because it was now my method like this.

Anyway, it’s a good idea to write music using one approach or another. If you try to tune as you create to harmonize, it will slow down and you can stop the creative flow.
